Fred Suffield

Blacksmith and Ironwork

Metal has been a passion of mine for over a decade. Starting my career in Colchester, where I learnt Metallurgy and welding whilst studying at the local Institute.

After completing the course I worked as a welder constructing car transporters. Not completly satisfied I seeked out ways to fulfill the creative in me. This lead me to leaving Colchester and traviling across the country to Hereford. Where I undertook a degree in artist blacksmithing.

Once graduated, I continued my learning with the The National Heritage Ironwork Group (NHIG).

The training was the first of its kind in the UK and set up by the NHIG as part of the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) Skills for the future and was designed as the first advanced training program for blacksmiths working in the British heritage ironwork sector. Completing this course has broaden my skills in historic ironwork repairs by bringing together the best of blacksmithing craft practise and the philosophy and ethics of conservation.

I am now working from a forge in Cotesbach, Leicestershire where I utilizes traditional blacksmith tools and processes to produce hand forged bespoke ironwork.

Create your own unique, traditionally forged piece of ironwork with Fred in his forge in Cotesbach

Enjoy a day in the forge, learn about the age old tools and techniques used by blacksmiths.  Experience the heat from the fire and feel the hammer beat down on a red hot piece of metal.  Make and leave with a handmade piece of ironwork that you forged for yourself…or why not treat a friend or family member.

Happy Blacksmiths after a day in the forge

By the end of the day you would have had the opportunity to learn how to work a fire, swing a hammer and strike while the iron is hot.  A chance to have a go at a number of different forging techniques, whilst producing a fire poker or toasting fork.
